Passage Seven

“Let me get that for you!” he stated, and picked it up. Tanya gave me an I-told-you-so look. Just perfect. Now I got a human checking me out and maybe even wanting to date me! The cashier carried the bags out of the store, locked the door, and walked with us down the street.
“Busy night?” he asked, trying to catch my gaze.
“Huh? Oh yeah,” I replied, deciding to let him catch it. He looked about nineteen. I was only sixteen! “Mom needed some stuff, so I decided to bring Tanya along.” I always tried bringing Tanya into the conversation, and this time she blushed and looked away.
“Tanya, you can’t go on loving humans! They’d never be able to know why you were gone so long when you were!” I warned a whisper to her ear. She blushed harder and looked down, sighing.
“I know. It’s just, this one is different. He’s nice and calm. He’s handsome and loving. You don’t know how much I envy you right now,” she replied, head still down. I gasped, not believing what I just heard. Tanya was envying me! She was a girl who never envied anyone and had never meant to!
“I can’t believe I haven’t introduced myself. I’m Dylan, and I work at the grocer’s every Saturday night,” the cashier started up a conversation, this time looking at Tanya. “Can you introduce me to your friend?” He whispered this into my ear, and I gasped.
“Sure! That’s Tanya, my best friend ever! She’s quite silly and fast, and I don’t mean that in a rude way either,” I laughed, moving aside so Tanya could stand next to Dylan. We walked down the road towards the 24hour Dunkin Donuts.
“Want to get some donuts?” asked Dylan, holding the door open for us. “I’m buying!” We laughed and joked and had a good time until I realized what time it was. The clock said it was 12:30am! I couldn’t have been gone that long! By the time I got back to May, it would already be 1:30am even taking the short cut!
“So the final joke is a friend is going to visit her blonde friend. She pulls up to the door and sees a dog running around in the yard. ‘What is her name?’ she asks her blonde friend, watching the dog with great eyes. ‘Timex’ replies the friend. ‘Why, those are odd names!’ exclaims the girl. ‘Well, she’s a watch dog.’ Says the blonde,” Dylan laughed, and he passed the money over to the cashier for the donuts.
“Oh my gosh Dylan! I didn’t know anyone could tell such good jokes!” laughed Tanya, wrapping up her untouched chocolate donut and pushing it aside. “We got to get going though.” We both looked up at the clock and she sighed. She probably wouldn’t see Dylan ever again and she had grown to love him!
“The Elders will be expecting us,” I hissed into Tanya’s ear. “They called a meeting for tonight remember?” She gasped, and we gave our thanks to Dylan. He reached over, grabbed a sheet of paper, and jotted down a number.
“Here’s my number. I’ll see you two around sometime,” he shoved the paper into Tanya’s hand and, winking, jogged out of the donut shop, barely remembering his coat.
“We need to hurry to the Meeting!” I hissed, and we dashed out the door after Dylan into the dark night.
Cars slowly rode down the road, stopping to look at nothing. We dashed across the road, barely avoiding an oncoming semi, and dashed into the forest, transforming into wolves in the midst of running.
