Passage Nine

Archive: http://chosenescape.blogspot.com/p/archive.html

“One wolf, Angel, realized it’d be easier to become a human, so we wouldn’t need so much violence. She started creeping around and studying them to her best degree. She found humans really disliked things that were different, and often even changed the most beautiful forests to mush to build their nests. She wandered around the country, watching their every move. They sometimes would go to a place with lots of nests and would trade little coins for food or milk.
“Seeing this made her angry. She didn’t want humans making the beautiful wildlife useless, barren and plain. There was a whole world out there, but the humans figured they were the top, and would stop at nothing to stay there. They hunted wolves for the fur, maybe the meat. Besides that, they threw the carcass away. Angel figured if they could become modest humans, but have the soul of the wild still within them, they could stay safe, and maybe even build a better human race.
“She went back to her natural home, the forest, and preached far and wide of her ideas. Soon, every forest in the Thirteen Colonies knew of her ideas, and some were deciding to go along. How would they become human? When would the process start? They needed some way to understand what the humans were saying, and how to become like them.
“The wolves decided they would just act like humans, and more and more, become like the humans themselves. After long, mind killing years of trying, Angel found a way to become human. She just needed to be able to switch her body from wolf to human every time she needed to. She went, watching humans once more, following their every move once again in order to get the information wolves needed. After about six years of searching, she came across a single way. She felt human inside, she even felt like it was a natural feeling. She let that feeling rise out of her body, rise slowly in order to try something.
“The human side rose out, and she looked down. She was a normal, everyday human! She looked like a human, understood what the other humans were saying, and found it quite the interest. She quickly unleashed her wild spirit, became a wolf again, and raced off to tell her wolf friends of the spirit she discovered.
“Unfortunately, a human had spotted her turning into a dog, and considered her a demon. He made up the story of the werewolves. Luckily, he didn’t see what she looked like, so she could continue going on, living in her human form. This was the start of the werewolves,” finished Roush, looking from one wolf to the next.
“Wasn’t there more to the story?” asked a little wolf cub named Mooki. “That seemed a little short.”
“There’s far more than just that,” explained Roush. “This is just an overview of the whole topic. Maybe one day I can explain the whole thing to you.” Mooki bounced up and down, clapping her paws, and rubbing her nose against Roush’s coat.
