“I think it’s somewhere farther north,” decided Fred, and they scurried away. Fred didn’t even bother to pick up his overcoat.
I crept out of the underbrush, alert of the men. They were heading back to their Camero, Fred still forgetting his overcoat. I figured it would set a trap for me, so I stalked south, towards the lake, towards civilization.
I picked up a scent of prey, so quickened my pace. I was surprised when Tanya, another wolf, appeared at my side.
“You need to use your nose more, Lily,” she teased, brushing her nose against my muddy coat.
“Oh be quiet,” I replied, looking down at my coat. It was normally snow white, but it had turned murky brown from crouching in the mud. “Some of those hunters came again. One of them didn’t have a gun, but he could almost sense me! Right when I thought he was staring right at me he turned away. There was something different about that guy, Tanya. His name was Fred.” Tanya took her head away from my coat, her face looking more serious and straight faced.
“This isn’t good. He could sense you? No normal human can do that! No, he must have been messing around with his friend. They smelled like rotten eggs! I could smell them from a mile away, literally!” she coughed, probably remembering the stench. I hadn’t thought about how bad they smelled, for I had been too worried that he would find me.
“He almost caught me,” I whispered so that barely Tanya could hear. “He said they’d be the first to catch a werewolf, but he suddenly just said one had been more north.”
“That isn’t good at all!” exclaimed Tanya. “I was about a mile north of where you had been! He must have known something. Maybe even the forest isn’t safe anymore! We have to warn the Elders!”
I’m sorry, I forgot to tell you. My name is Lillian, and I’m a werewolf. Not one of those flesh eating things that will kill whatever gets in their way, a large looking wolf with excellent hearing and smelling. Yes, we transformed from human to wolf form, but we all preferred wolf form. It was more comfortable. The only time we weren’t in wolf form was when we were at home or acting like normal humans, which wasn’t often. We didn’t speak any language; we could just understand each other’s thoughts. When we transformed, the clothes we had on while transforming earlier on were still on us. It was like they couldn’t be harmed while I was in wolf form.
Tanya is my best bud, a ginger coated werewolf about the size of a normal, full grown wolf. She can disguise her scent so you can’t smell her when she’s coming, and she uses it for pranks on me. Her coat blends in with the woods, her favorite place in the world. She can actually climb trees, so she often does whenever a hunter is about. She isn’t a very amazing fighter, so she normally will run away from violence. Oh yeah, and she’s very clumsy. The only time she wasn’t clumsy was when a hunter was around. She trips over her own paws, even though she’s a very fast runner. She’s two years older than me, eighteen, but we’re still best buds ever.
